Pathaan (2023) – A Blockbuster Worth the Wait
After a four-year hiatus from leading roles, Shah Rukh Khan returned to Hindi cinema with Pathaan — a high-octane action thriller that shattered box office records and reminded audiences exactly why he is called the King of Bollywood. Directed by Siddharth Anand and produced under Yash Raj Films' spy universe, Pathaan delivers exactly what its trailers promised: explosive action, glamour, and a charismatic lead performance.
Story & Plot
The film follows Pathaan (Shah Rukh Khan), a RAW agent who has operated off the grid for years. When a deadly terrorist organization called JOCR, led by the menacing Jim (John Abraham), threatens a catastrophic attack on India, Pathaan is called back into action. He teams up with ISI agent Rubai (Deepika Padukone) in a globe-trotting mission to neutralize the threat before it's too late.
The plot is not breaking new ground in the spy thriller genre, but it doesn't need to. The screenplay is lean, the pacing is relentless, and the film never overstays its welcome. At over two and a half hours, it breezes by.
Performances
- Shah Rukh Khan – Effortlessly charismatic, physically impressive, and emotionally resonant in the quieter moments. His swagger is fully intact.
- Deepika Padukone – More than just a co-lead, she holds her own in action sequences and brings genuine screen presence.
- John Abraham – Plays a menacing antagonist with conviction, making for a compelling on-screen rivalry.
Action & Spectacle
The action sequences are among the best ever staged in a Bollywood film. The Afghanistan chase, the cable car sequence in Spain, and the climactic battle are all visually stunning and technically impressive. Bollywood has often been criticized for unrealistic action, but Pathaan brings a cinematic quality that rivals many Hollywood productions.
Music
The soundtrack, composed by Vishal-Shekhar, features crowd-pleasing numbers. Besharam Rang and Jhoome Jo Pathaan became massive hits before the film's release, adding to its pre-release buzz. The songs are well-integrated and don't derail the film's pacing.
Verdict
Pathaan is not a film that reinvents Hindi cinema — it is, unapologetically, a big, bold commercial entertainer. But it executes its formula with exceptional polish, energy, and star power. For fans who waited years for SRK's comeback, it is deeply satisfying. For new audiences, it is an excellent entry point into modern Bollywood action cinema.
